A few months ago, the The White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders announced the “What’s Your Story” video challenge. The challenge asked Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders to answer 3 questions to raise awareness on the issues they are facing today. Those 3 questions:
1. How have your unique experiences shaped who you are today?
2. What issues matter to you?
3. In what ways are you making a difference in your community?
With over 200 video submissions, 11 finalists have been chosen. Go here to watch the videos and vote for your favorites. By submitting your unique email address, you will be counted as 1 vote towards helping to choose a group of finalists to represent us and share our stories at a White House Champions of Change Event in March (2012).
On behalf of all us here at Jackfroot, we support our brother Paul Kim who made it to the top 11 finalists. Together, we want to reinforce the message: DREAM BIG! Paul started making friends by making people laugh at an early age. As a way to deviate from being made fun of for being the scrawny Asian kid on the block, he took on comedy and has made a name for himself in the industry. He grew up learning one thing from his immigrant parents – with hard work and faith, dreams do come true.
He recognized that “more than any country in the world, America was built on the foundation of dreaming big”. Paul founded Kollaboration, which is an Asian Pacific Islander entertainment movement that has helped to provide a stage for hundreds of Asian Americans – who are underrepresented – to showcase their talents through art. Art empowers our community to have a voice, and his initiative for this movement has proven that we not only want to be heard and are being heard. Kollaboration’s first show was in 2000, and has since grown to 14 different cities producing annual show cases nationwide.
