Jackfroot is all about finding great films and movies that really tell a realistic story on how the real world is like. We recently came across this awesome short film called, “The Sunset”. This film was shot in San Francisco and is written and directed by Misha Sundukovskiy, a filmmaker from New York. In the film, Misha shows how us some of the struggles and difficulties Asians have to overcome in America.
Synopsis:
Located in the western-part of San Francisco, the Sunset District is home to Wen Ping, a Chinese American teenager who works at the family liquor store and attends a local community college. Wen, like many of his generation, is surrounded by racial prejudice and tension between those of Asian decent and those of Irish decent that has permeated the neighborhood for decades. He struggles to find friends, but not offend his family.
This becomes especially hard when his older brother, Tran, discovers that Wen has been selling kegs of beer with his Irish-American friend, Johnny Murphy. Facing his family’s judgment, Wen must decide if blood or friendship runs deeper. The Sunset is a gritty drama that deals with teenage violence and substance abuse along with the racial undertones that accompany San Francisco’s largest working-class residential district.
