According to The Hollywood Reporter, Constance Wu, who currently plays Jessica Huang on the hit show “Fresh Off the Boat” is currently in talks to star in, “Crazy Rich Asians,” an upcoming film from the book written by Kevin Kwan.
Fresh Off the Boat is currently in it’s 3rd season. This is big news for the young Asian American actress and even bigger news for Asians in mainstream media.
Wu excitedly made a recent statement on her Facebook page:
“Thrilled to be joining the movie #CrazyRichAsians directed by an Asian American Jon M. Chu, written by Asian Americans Kevin Kwan and Adele Lim, starring an Asian American (me!), and featuring a global, all Asian cast!!” – Constance Wu
Based on the best-selling book, in Crazy Rich Asians, Nick Young is a history professor at NYU, and he’s falling in love with fellow professor Rachel Chu. When he travels back to Singapore to attend his best friend’s wedding, he brings Rachel with him. And before long, his secret is out. Nick is from a family that is worth $13 billion. He’s perhaps the most eligible bachelor in Asia, and every single woman in his ultra-rarefied social class is incredibly jealous of Rachel and wants to bring her down. It’s up to her to prove to his insanely privileged family that she’s worthy to be his wife.
In the movie, Wu would be taking on the role of Rachel Chu, a Chinese-American economics professor. Even though the film isn’t confirmed yet, the website states that casting call is closed so things seem to be taking off fast.
This film project seems to be a perfect fit for Wu and will also feature an all-Asian cast, which is something Hollywood and the movie industry seems to be lacking in this modern day age.
