Jackfroot Exclusive Interview
1. What challenges have you come up with being an artist at a very young age?
A lot of older critics didn’t take me seriously. When I first came on the scene I was perceived as just a little 14 year-old Asian kid — so they wouldn’t take me seriously like they would a Bow Wow or a Diggy Simmons. As more people heard my material, that’s when opinions started to change.
2. How has the Internet changed the way you market yourself?
There are more outlets for promotion, whether its video uploading or blogging—which is huge for hip hoppers. Nowadays you can upload a video on Youtube and become a superstar overnight.
3. Who are some of your top favorite artists you respect and look up to?
Drake – because he’s a hometown hero. Mac Miller – because he’s a kid that has a young, feel-good vibe. Rick Ross—because he’s so animated and theatrical with his flow.
4. What do you do when you get writer’s block and can’t come up with new lyrics?
If I get blocked I take a breather and listen to a different genre before I get back to what I am doing. But I don’t really get writer’s block. If I’m writing a song, I know exactly what I want to say and I am so focused that I keep writing until it works.
5. If you weren’t doing music, what can you picture yourself doing today?
I would probably be a zookeeper or a pet storeowner because I love animals; especially cats.
6. What kind of snacks or drinks are a must when you go on tour?
AriZona Green Tea. Fruit Roll-Ups, the Original Strawberry flavor because all the other flavors are a little too extra (laughs). I also love fresh pineapple slices.
7. How did your parents feel about you and your pursuit in music when you first started off?
My mom wanted me to go to school and graduate. My mom is really modern. She knows the Hip-Hop and Rap industry is predominantly African-American, but after she listened to a couple of my tracks she jumped on board and really believed in the music that I was making.
8. When you’re not making music, what are some hobbies or things you like to do for fun?
I like gardening and planting vegetables. My mom and I grew tomatoes, strawberries and zucchinis.
9. What are some of your favorite movies?
The 40-Year-Old Virgin is my all time favorite movie. Other movies that I like are Social Network, Pulp Fiction and The Pursuit of Happyness.
10. What are your future plans or where do you see yourself in 5 years?
I want to influence people who hear me. I want to be a mogul and venture out to become an entrepreneur within music.
