Cozied in the housing estates sits a humble family business in the busy town of Garden Grove. As for many people, fried chicken isn’t an unfamiliar food.
We see it everywhere from fast food joints to even bistros that share the same crunchy and crisp brown tastes. What if I told you that there was one significant destination that stood out among the rest? One carrying heavy family traditions of passed-on ingredients and secret recipes?
Let’s dive into this establishment we know and love, Mama Hieu’s.
There’s a lot to point out with this small mom and pop business, but let us start with the basics from price to portions to overall flavors of their garlic butter chicken wings (cánh gà chiên bơ tỏi) and their customer service. Three very distinguished factors of this unique fried chicken business.
The price to portion is well balanced when you compare it to other popular spots and well-known places. A measly $13 gave you a house box specialty which includes 9 fried chickens, rice, and pickled veggies with their special seasoning. This was too much for me so I leftovers to eat anohter day.
Nowadays we hardly run into portions that often do that for you. Not to mention that the flavor was still apparent the day after.
Speaking of which! The cánh gà chiên bơ tỏi both in original and spicy tasted FANTASTIC. Their batter covered the chicken and made it perfectly crispy to the last bite.
Their spices of garlic, scallions and other ingredients seemed to seep through the meat and crust which added that extra ounce of savory but slightly sweet taste.
All that, and not a single overwhelming pool of grease or oil. Even when I checked the bottom of the box!
A note for the new people wanting to try the spicy wings – yes, it’s SPICY. Thankfully, it’s nothing too overwhelming that would cause for the need for milk as the pickled veggie side had actual soothed both my tongue and palette.
My favorite thing about local small businesses are always the unique stories and friendly faces behind it and this place is no exception.
I had the pleasure of talking with everyone in the business structure and each had their own contributions to the business, each with their own set of skills as well as ambitions/goals for the brand moving forward.
With an immediate attention to customer service, orders, and questions, you start to feel important and part of the family.
Mama Hieu’s carries more than just tasty food to you, but you feel and taste the essence of family love, recipes and traditions poured all into one favorable sized box and/or trays of specialty cánh gà chiên bơ tỏi.
