This is awesome! 🤗🏮🧧 Barbie recently announced that it partnered with @GuoPei to create a special Lunar New Year doll.
#GuoPei is China’s first and only officially recognized couturier, and is known for her lavish and imaginative creations.
Pei is most known for styling #Rihanna at the 2015 MET Gala, and had her creations featured at Singapore’s Asian Civilizations Museum in the summer of 2019.
The doll itself is dressed up in a red dress similar to a #cheongsam, Chinese traditional dress, or a Vietnamese #aodai.
The vision for the doll revolved around the phoenix, a mythological bird said to be immortal, rising to life again from its own ashes.
In addition to representing femininity and grace, it also symbolizes the passage of time and the cycle of life and renewal – the kinds of things considered a little more deeply during a meaningful annual holiday such as the Lunar New Year.
Guo Pei carried the phoenix motif all the way through the design. For accessories, the most prominent piece is the gold hairpiece sculpted in the shape of a phoenix.
The phoenix is the main design theme for this doll, and is seen throughout the design of the dress.
Guo Pei’s handiwork is meant to celebrate cultural symbolism and authenticity for this holiday season.
👉 From @Barbie: For many Asian communities around the world, Lunar New Year festivities bring an occasion to honor one’s heritage and wish for good fortune in the year to come. 🧧
In celebration, Barbie partners with the esteemed @GuoPei, China’s first and only officially recognized couturier.
With unique golden phoenix details representing grace, and a water motif for wealth and resilience, Guo Pei’s dazzling design is rich with cultural symbolism, bringing joy and authenticity to the #LunarNewYear holiday with #Barbie.
