NEW YORK — A 28-year-old man died after breaking his neck in a freak accident while trying to jump over a turnstile at a Queens subway station on Sunday, shocking surveillance video shows.
Police say that Christopher De La Cruz, 28, was “attempting to evade paying the subway fare” when the accident took place at around 6:45am Sunday at the Forest Hills-71st Avenue train station in Queen, New York.
The disturbing video shows De La Cruz trying to jump over a turnstile several times after he entered the station — but he falls and appears to drop his phone.
De La Cruz then gets back up and can be seen stumbling backwards before repeatedly trying to jump over another turnstile.
On his final attempt, De La Cruz somehow loses his balance causing his body to flip over the barrier, landing onto his head and fatally causing his neck to slap, police said.
He was pronounced dead at the scene. Prayers and condolences to the man and his family.
