Minari, a Korean American film, which features The Walking Dead star Steven Yeun, recently won a Golden Globe for best foreign-language film at the 78th annual Golden Globe Awards.
Written and directed by Lee Isaac Chung, the movie is about a Korean American family that moves to Arkansas to start a farm in hopes of achieving their own version of what they believed to be the American dream.
Amidst the challenges of this new life in the strange and rugged Ozarks, they discover the undeniable resilience of family and what really makes a home.
Lee shares his thank you speech accepting the award virtually with his daughter clinging to him. “She’s the reason I made this film.”
“Minari is about a family. It’s a family trying to learn how to speak a language of its own. It goes deeper than any American language and any foreign language. It’s a language of the heart. I’m trying to learn it myself and pass it on, and I hope we’ll all learn to speak this language of love to each other – especially this year.” – Lee Isaac Chung
Co-produced by A24 and Plan B and released this month, “Minari” is in both English and Korean but was ineligible for entry into the best picture race.
The Golden Globes was heavily criticized for only considering this film in this specific category and was ineligible for entry into the best picture race per Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. rules for films more than 50% in a language other than English.
Steven Yeun shared his thoughts on the controversy. Watch this discussion from ET Canada.
